Keeping your computer secure
When connecting to the Internet with your AUSTAR broadband service, it's important to keep your computer secure and up-to-date with the latest patches and security updates. Your computer should have at the minimum a firewall (included with Windows XP), anti-virus software and anti-spyware software.
Below you will find some links to software available on the Internet to help you secure your computer. This information is not an endorsement of any particular software, but may be useful in helping you to select anti-virus and other security software.
Anti-virus software
It's important that you use anti-virus software and scan your computer regularly for viruses. Viruses can come into your computer through various means including email attachments, CD-Roms and other removable media or directly from the Internet via open communication ports.
Anti-spyware software
Spyware is malicious software that records your computer activity and then may send information back to a remote server. Spyware may be used to capture credit card details or other personal information as you type it in.
Firewall software
A firewall keeps remote computers from being able to gain access to your computer. It blocks communication ports that may be used by malicious Internet users to access or control your computer.
